BANKSTON, Iowa -- Sylvester C. "Bud" Rauen, 87, of 606 2nd St. NE, Farley, formerly of Bankston, died at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at his home in Farley, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m., the Farley American Legion Post 656 will meet at 6:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born on May 21, 1922, in Bankston, son of Paul and Mary (Arlen) Rauen. He was a 1939 graduate of the former St. Clement's High School in Bankston.

He married Eileen Nadermann on Sept. 16, 1946, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Dyersville. Together they farmed on the Rauen's family farm until their retirement. Bud was passionate about farming. He worked the ground below him, he loved the people around him and worshipped the God above him.

He was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, for which he served on the Parish Council. Bud served 30 years on the Dubuque Board of Review and 25 years on the Dubuque County Fair Board. Bud was a member of the Farley Knights of Columbus-Council 2001, the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly-Council 1573.

In his younger years, Bud coached and was an active participant on the Bankston Indians Little League. He was an avid collector of John Deere tractors. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Eileen Rauen, of Farley; five sons, Richard "Rick" (Mary) Rauen, Paul (Lois) Rauen, Dennis (Virginia "Corky") Rauen and Steve (Joanne) Rauen, all of Farley, and David (Joyce) Rauen, of Bankston; 17 grandchildren, Stacey Knapik, Dr. Aaron (Shelli) Rauen, Dr. Sara (Sean) Dardis, Dr. Matthew (Sara) Rauen, Peter (Becky) Rauen, Tammy (Nathan) Spiegel, Jason Rauen (friend, Kelly Bergfeld), Bill (Molly) Rauen, Tom, Tim, Luke and Megan Rauen, Marie, John, Olivia, Rebecca and Gloria Rauen; nine great-grandchildren, Tait, Michael, Anna, Andrew, Kate, Elizabeth, Annalise, Ana and Landry; three siblings, Myrene Lattner, of Bankston, Florence Callahan, of Epworth, and Willis "Bill" (Janice) Rauen, of Dubuque; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald Hess, of Dyersville, Millie Smith, of Milwaukee, Wis., Bernice Garretson, of Waterloo, Germaine Reed, of Burbank, Wash., Jim (Connie) Nadermann and Tom (Helen) Nadermann, both of Dyersville, Jenny Nadermann, of Aurora, Colo., and Agnes Nadermann, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Angela Rauen; a great-grandson, Lucas Spiegel; a brother, Peter (Verna) Rauen; sisters, Luella (Mark) Beckman, Theresa (Adrian) Milbert, Ardella (Gabe) Even and Rita Hess; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray Callahan, Elmer (Juanita) Nadermann, Leo (Dorothy) Nadermann, Laverne Nadermann, Robert Nadermann, Fred Smith, Bob Reed and Dean Garretson.
