Aloysius "Al" Thier 1927-2004

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Aloysius "Al" Thier, 77, of Dyersville, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Luther Manor, Dubuque, from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1927, in Dyersville, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Claus) Thier.

He married Donna Offerman on June 7, 1960, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Earlville. Together they farmed the family's century farm northeast of Dyersville until retirement.

He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; two sons, Larry Thier, of Farley, and Patrick (Karen) Thier, of Olympia, Wash.; three daughters, Kathy (Kevin) Mensen, of Dyersville, Suzanne (Kerwin) Burt, of Waterloo, and Karolyn, at home; seven grandchildren, Douglas, Robbie and Brad Mensen, Joshua Thier and Trey, Kalen and Sierra Burt; and a brother, Don (Mary) Thier, of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Carl; his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Thier; two brothers, Cletus and Richard Thier; and a sister, Virginia Gross.
