August J. "Gus" Thier 1925-2006

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - August J. "Gus" Thier, 81, of Dyersville, died Thursday May 4, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1925, in Dyersville, son of Joseph Sr. and Anna (Claus) Thier.

He graduated from Xavier High School and attended Loras College.

He married Kay Schemmel on Aug. 25, 1949, in Farley. Together they farmed until his retirement in 1982, when they moved to town.

Gus enjoyed driving and hauling dog crates all over the United States for G & T Crates, a company he co-owned with his son, Terry.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734.

Surviving are his wife, Kay; two sons, Steve (Cherrie) and Terry (Sherry), both of Dyersville; a daughter, Jan (Mark) Krapfl, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six grandchildren, Travis, Justin and Robbie Thier and Kelly, Morgan and Olivia Krapfl; two stepgrandchildren, Angela (Tim) English and Jennifer (Pat) Hogrefe; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Claire and Bennett English and Ashton Hogrefe; a brother, Joe (Dolores) Thier, of Farley; two sisters-in-law, Kay Thier and Marie Thier; a brother-in-law, Francis Stoffel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Austin Krapfl; two brothers, Arthur and James Thier; a sister, Germaine Mescher; a brother-in-law, Bill Mescher; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Stoffel.
