DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Joseph J. Thier Jr., 83, of 14554 Pape Road, Farley, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from

2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1926, in Dyersville, son of Joseph and Anna (Claus) Thier Sr. He received his education in the rural country schools and St. Francis Xavier School in Dyersville.

He married Dolores Rollinger on Aug. 3, 1957, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen. Together the couple farmed in the rural Dyersville area. He was a Dekalb Seed salesman and also was a school bus driver for the Western Dubuque Schools for many years.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Dyersville, the Dyersville Knights of Columbus-Council 1734 and the Little Switzerland Polka Club.

Joe enjoyed a good conversation and sharing amusing stories with others. He will be missed by many.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores Thier, of Farley; two sons, Victor (Jean) Thier, of Bernard, and Jerry Thier, of Bankston; a daughter, Laura (Greg) Russell, of Greenfield, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Sheri Thier, of Epworth; nine grandchildren, Craig (Diane) Thier, of Dubuque, Carl (fiancé, Alaina Conrad) Thier, of Marion, Tina (Randy) Miller, of Dubuque, Jaimie and Cory Thier, of Epworth, and Samantha, Veronica, Nicholas and Jessica Russell, all of Greenfield; a great-granddaughter, Ella Thier; sisters-in-law, Kay Thier, Marie Thier, Marie (Earl) Wagner, and Betty (Dick) Knapp; brothers-in-law, Jim (Sandy) Rollinger, Bob (Lynn) Rollinger, Ronnie (Diane) Rollinger; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Thier, on May 20, 2002; his parents; brothers, sisters and in-laws, Germaine and Bill Mescher, Art and Catherine "Kay" Thier, Jim Thier, August "Gus" Thier; and a sister-in-law, Lavonne Rollinger.
