DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Donald J. Thier, 81, of Dyersville, died at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006, at the Lutheran Home, Strawberry Point, following a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery, Bankston. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Thier was a farmer. He later worked in maintenance at Western Dubuque Schools and Mercy Hospital, St. Mary's Unit, Dyersville.

He was born on July 25, 1924, in Farley, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Claus) Thier. He married Mary Margaret Neumann on Nov. 20, 1956, at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston.

Don was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville.

Don enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Thier, of Dyersville; two sons, Mark Thier and Ken Thier, both of Dallas; two daughters, Marilyn Thier, of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Sharon (Jim) Dolphin, of Conrad; and three grandsons, Jace, Chad and Troy Dolphin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Cletus, Richard and Aloysius Thier; and a sister, Virginia Gross.

A Donald J. Thier Memorial Fund has been established.
