BERNARD, Iowa - Irvin J. Valentine, 83, of 689 Creek Branch Lane, Bernard, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, peacefully at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Assumption, Sylvia Switch, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Valentine farmed in the Bernard area for 54 years with his wife. He also owned and operated Irv's Body Shop and built and operated the Farley Speedway.

He was born on June 13, 1917, in Zwingle, son of Henry and Lydia (Utzig) Valentine. He married Lelia C. "Sis" Schmit on Feb. 28, 1938, at St. Raphael's Cathedral.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. He liked stock car racing, boating, fishing and camping.

Surviving are his wife, Lelia "Sis" Valentine; five daughters, Beverly J. (Ken) Hansen, of Dubuque, Arlene M. (Terry) Moore, of Bernard, Janice K. (Paul) Kramer, Jean A. (Russell) Recker, both of Cascade, and Sheila K. (Bob) Paul, of Charles City; eight sons, Irvin L. "Butch" (Rose) Valentine, of Dubuque, Gerald T. (Roberta) Valentine, of Bernard, Thomas L. Valentine, Henry J. Valentine, both of Dubuque, David J. (Phyllis) Valentine, of Epworth, Kenneth M. (LouAnn) Valentine, of Bernard, Michael J. (Nancy) Valentine, of Bellevue, and Gregory J. (Cheryl) Valentine, of Dubuque; 58 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Marie) Valentine, of Dubuque; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Valentine, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Valentine in 1939; a son, Terry N. Valentine on May 31, 1997; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Lena) Brune and Mrs. Florian (Henrietta) Tigges; and a brother, Leonard and Thelma Valentine.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road.

The family would like to thank Dr. Krish and his nursing staff, Nancy Theisen of Finley Home Care and a special thanks to Bonnie, Katie and Susie of Hospice for their care and concern.
