MONMOUTH, Iowa - Leon F. Steffen, 68, of Monmouth, died after a brief illness Monday, March 26, 2001, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvia Switch. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where there will be a vigil service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Steffen farmed and worked for Flynn Ready Mix and Mathy Construction, both in Dubuque. He also operated the Hideway Supper Club in Monmouth.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1932, in Guttenberg, son of Francis and Evelyn (Hoger) Steffen. He married Anna Mae Dondlinger on Feb. 5, 1952, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Springbrook.

He was a Korean conflict Army veteran. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvia Switch, Monmouth Amvets Post 64 and the American Legion Post 513, Baldwin.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Mae Steffen; two daughters, Karla (Mrs. Jim) Mahoney, of Bernard, and Karen (Mrs. Larry Joe) Stoffel, of Peosta; three sons, Darrell (Dorothy) Steffen, of Maquoketa, Daniel (Karen) Steffen, of La Motte, and Dean (Ronay) Steffen, of Maquoketa; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Bernita Kaiser, of Hazel Green, Wis., and Mary Kay Shanahan, of Dubuque; and five brothers, Donald (Vivian) Steffen, of Dyersville, David (Eileen) Steffen, of Cascade, and Loras (Mary Ann) Steffen, Elmer (Phyllis) Steffen and Kenneth (Nancy) Steffen, all of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter and a brother-in-law.

A Leon F. Steffen Memorial Fund has been established.
