Doris M. Slattery, 97, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of Assisi Village, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Stonehill.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery, Sylvia Switch, Iowa. Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1916, in Zwingle, Iowa, daughter of Dominic and Florence (Donovan) Sweeney. She was raised by her paternal grandfather after the death of her parents in 1918 during a flu epidemic. Doris attended La Motte High School and graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1968.

She married Wilson Slattery in December of 1935.

Doris was a teacher in the Dubuque Community School District from 1950 to 1980, retiring as "Mother Audubon" from Audubon Elementary School. In 1965, Doris taught the first Head Start class in the city of Dubuque.

She served four years as assistant state director of the American Association of Retired Persons before being appointed state director of AARP in 1989. Doris served three years as the state coordinator of the Retired Teachers Association, president of the Carnegie-Stout Public Library Board from 1984 to 1986, and served on three medical missions with Dubuque doctors and nurses. In 1988, she spent two months in Quito, Ecuador, where she assisted at the Working Boys Center and introduced a mini special education program. Doris also did mission work in Haiti. She served as a volunteer at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque Leisure Services, Nativity Parish, Carnegie-Stout Public Library and Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, where she volunteered until the age of 90.

Doris was a member of Resurrection Parish, the Theresians and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children, Dorene (Vincent) Finocchiaro, of Rancho Mirage, Calif., Frank (Jane) Slattery, of Oshkosh, Wis., Donald (Linda) Slattery, of Dubuque, and Doryce "Dee" Slattery, of Asbury Park, N.J.; and over 20 grandchildren and more than 40 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilson Slattery; her son, Richard; her daughter, Diane McCarty Slattery; her grandsons, Jeff McCarty and Scott and Tim Slattery; and her granddaughter, Kelleye McCarty.

Memorials may be given to Stonehill Care Center Foundation.
