ZWINGLE, Iowa - Henry L. Schuster, 78, of 728 Bennettsville Road, Zwingle, died at 1:58 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Assumption Church, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle, with burial in Assumption Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1922, in Bernard, son of William and Lucille (Geisler) Schuster.
He married Bernice Pancratz on Feb. 12, 1947, at St. Joseph's Prairie Church. They farmed all of their lives together in the Zwingle area.
He served in the Army during World War II with the 389th Engineers Division in France. He was a member of Assumption Church, Sylvia Switch and the Fourth Degree Duborg Assembly, Dubuque. He was a life-long member of the La Motte Knights of Columbus Council 4236. He helped found the Dubuque County Holstein Club. He served as a 4-H leader and on the Swiss Valley Farms board of directors. He also served as a township director for the Dubuque County Farm Bureau and the Dubuque County Extension Council. He also served as a director of the Key West Fire Department for 25 years.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice; sons, Robert (Nancy) Schuster, of Zwingle, David (Peggy) Schuster, of Dubuque, and Donald (Barbara) Schuster, of Zwingle; daughters, Elizabeth (Kevin) Strain, of Camanche, and Bonnie (Kenneth) Veach, of Zwingle; 17 grandchildren, Kristina (Rodney) Haxmeier, Jody, Craig and James Schuster, Jennifer (William) Hellman, Daniel and Carrie Schuster, Sara, Adrian and Katie Strain, Paul, Kelly, Josua and Jason Schuster, and Michael, Teri and Brian Veach; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Nichole Haxmeier; two brothers, Ray (Lorraine) Schuster and William (Lorraine) Schuster, both of Dubuque; half brothers, Joseph (Alverna) Schuster, of Liberty, Mo., Richard (Geraldine) Schuster, of Platteville, Wis., Loras (Lois) Schuster and Gerald (Lola) Schuster, both of Dubuque; half sisters, Carol Lynch, of Dubuque, and Mary Scheckel, of Springbrook; and two brothers-in-law, Albin Wickman and Mahlon Scheckel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Veronica Wickman; a granddaughter, Melissa Schuster; and his stepmother, Clara (Schneider) Schuster.
A Henry L. Schuster Memorial Fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kirkendall and his staff, especially Kate, and the staff of The Finley Hospital for the excellent care they gave to Henry.
