JoAnn Reiss, 87, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2014. By her wishes, JoAnn was an organ donor.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road.

JoAnn was born on Oct. 7, 1926, daughter of Clarence and Irene (Guerdet) Kies. She married Carl Reiss on June 22, 1948, at St. Theresa Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on March 23, 2002.

JoAnn graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1944. She was a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse until her marriage. Together, Carl and JoAnn farmed near St. Theresa's until they moved to Dubuque in 1980. The farm is now a Century Farm.

JoAnn was a devoted mother and grandmother. She believed education was important and taught all of her children how to read before they started kindergarten. She enjoyed music and would sing most of the day while working around the house. She also gave all her children the opportunity to learn piano at school.

She was a superb cook and will always be remembered for her fried chicken dinner.

Taking pictures was her favorite hobby and she left a wonderful family chronicle through her photo albums.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Mike (Linnie) Reiss, of Dubuque, Peter Reiss, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Elaine (Doug Blong) Reiss, of Dubuque, Mark Reiss, of Mount Belvieu, Texas, Mary Jo (Jay) McDonald, of St. Donatus, Dennis Reiss, of St. Catherine's, Tony (Kathy) Reiss, of rural La Motte; a son-in-law, Dave Holder, of Beaver Dam, Wis.; grandchildren Brian (Ann) Meyer, Jim Meyer, Katie (Steve) Lucas, Nicole (Kevin) King, Teresa (Kyle Baker) Reiss, Tom Reiss, Cassie McDonald, Zach (Kristena Montgomery) McDonald, Amanda (Travis) Steines, Anthony (Erica Felton) Reiss and Adam Reiss; great grandchildren, Evelyn and Clara Meyer, James Reiss, Peyton and Ella McDonald and Vanessa and Troy Steines; sisters-in-law, Lee Kies, Beth Splinter and Mary Ann Winter; and a brother-in-law, Richard Benson.

She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Anne Reiss Holder; her grandson, Troy Meyer; brothers, Jack and Karl Kies; and her sister, Joyce Kies Splinter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the JoAnn Reiss Memorial Fund.
