Carl R. Reiss, 80, of 1660 S. Grandview Ave., died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on July 2, 1921, in Dubuque County, son of Reinhart and Theresa (Schuster) Reiss. He married JoAnn Kies at St. Theresa's church in La Motte, Iowa, on June 22, 1948.

Carl farmed most of his life and worked at Roshek's from 1965 to 1970 and at Mercy Medical Center from 1970 to 1984, when he retired.

Carl treasured every moment he spent with his grandchildren. He loved children and they loved him. He was also a gifted woodworker and cabinetmaker.

Carl was an avid reader and took interest in many aspects of life. He enjoyed card playing and checkers with his grandchildren. He had a smile for everyone.

Surviving are his wife, JoAnn, of Dubuque; his children, Mike (Linda) Reiss, of Dubuque, Anne (Dave) Holder, of Kodiak, Alaska, Peter Reiss, of Dubuque, Elaine (Doug Blong) Reiss, of Dubuque, Mark Reiss, of Mont Belview, Texas, Mary Jo (Jay) McDonald, of St. Donatus, Iowa, Dennis Reiss, of Troy, Ohio, and Tony (Kay) Reiss, of La Motte; grandchildren, Brian (Ann) Meyer, Jim Meyer, Katie Meyer, Nicole Reiss, Teresa Reiss, Tom Reiss, Cassie McDonald, Zack McDonald, Amanda Reiss, Anthony Reiss, Adam Reiss; great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Clara Meyer; step-grandchildren, Tammy Holder, Terry Holder, Todd (Tammy) Holder, and Tracey Holder; step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Holder, Amanda Holder, Megan Holder, Taylor Holder, Zachary Holder, Colby Holder, Josh Holder and Jaimee Holder; a sister, Marie (Dick) Benson; and brothers, Ralph and Rev. Robert Reiss.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Martin, in 1983; and a grandson, Troy Meyer, in 1988.

A Carl Reiss Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Paulsen, and Sister Gabrielle for all of their loving care.
