John W. "Blackie" Linden 1922-2000

MAQUOKETA, Iowa - John W. "Blackie" Linden, 78, of Maquoketa, formerly of Zwingle and Dubuque, died after a brief illness Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle. The family will honor his request and the body was cremated. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 75, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3633 of Maquoketa, and Amvets Post 62 of Andrew. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Linden was a fork truck driver at John Deere Dubuque Works for 17 years, retiring in July 1982. He also served as a policeman for the city of Dubuque for 13 years and farmed in the Zwingle area for 33 years.

He was born on May 26, 1922, in Dubuque, son of Charles and Lucille (Pillard) Linden. He married Ruby Swan on Aug. 18, 1956, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He served in the Air Force and the Army in England during World War II. He was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Linden, of Maquoketa; five daughters, Karen (Mrs. Michael) Chase, of Sheridan, Ill., Susan (Mrs. Dan) Brickner, of Perry, Kim (Mrs. David) Gilmore and Stacey Linden, both of Maquoketa, and Kelli (Mrs. Tim) Herber, of Lakeville, Minn.; a son, John G. (Paula) Linden, of Onslow; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson; a sister, Dorothy Bastain, of Dubuque; and a brother, Eugene Linden, of La Crosse, Wis.

He was preceded in death by a son, Chris, in 1980; his parents; and three brothers, Merle, Charles and Ralph.

Memorials are preferred.
