Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Ed Siegert-Al Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1932, in Zwingle, son of Irvin and Lucille (Dimmer) Laughlin. He married Doris Dunne on Oct. 19, 1955, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, La Motte.

They farmed in Cascade and Zwingle. Joe also worked as plant manager/salesman at C & J Service Co., Ottercreek, and Swiss Valley Ag Service, in Andrew, until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of the armed forces during the Korean War. He also was a member of Assumption Parish and the Knights of Columbus La Motte Council 4236. Joe had a deep faith in God, trusting him completely to take care of him and the family he loved so much. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed his woodworking and loved to travel.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; two daughters, Cindy (Pat) Elbert, of Iowa City, and Sherri (Brian) Jansen, of Matthews, N.C.; three sons, Jack (Pam) Laughlin, of Fort Dodge, Len (Sherri) Laughlin, of Redmond, Ore., and Bob (Gina) Laughlin, of Wyoming, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Powers and Darlene (Don) Kamm, both of Dubuque; two brothers, Justin (Rosetta) Laughlin, of Maquoketa, and Al (Lois) Laughlin, of Epworth; and a sister-in-law, Mae Laughlin, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mari-Beth; two sons, Richard and David; his parents, Irvin and Lucille; a brother, Robert; and a brother-in-law, Williams Powers.

God does not always answer yes to every prayer. I pray and sometimes he answers "No my child, I have a better way."
