John J. Hoerner, 64, of 9559 Maquoketa Drive, died at 11:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, with his family and friends at his side.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Chapel Mausoleum at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at The Leonard Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Hoerner worked for Three Rivers FS for 25 years on the fuel truck, retiring in 1985.

He was born on May 1, 1935, in Key West, son of Walter and Gladys (Woodrich) Hoerner. He married Phyllis Brecht on May 2, 1959, in Holy Cross, Iowa.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish, Key West, and its Holy Name Society. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus 510; Elks Lodge 297; Farm Bureau; and the "Know it all Club."

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Hoerner, of Dubuque; a daughter, Lisa (Gary) Wittman, of Dubuque; a son, William (Kathy) Hoerner, of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, who he dearly loved, Tammy, Ted, Tonya, Ty and Timothy Wittman, and Amber and Emily Hoerner; two brothers, Bob (Millie) Hoerner and Jim (Sally) Hoerner, both of Key West; a sister, Ann (Robert) Lambe, of Zwingle, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Darlene Hoerner, of St. Louis; and an aunt, Esther Essman, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; three sisters, Betty Smith, Mary O'Toole and Sally Clewell; and his mother- and father-in-law, Leo and Veronica Brecht.

Memorials may be given to Diabetes Center at The Finley Hospital and Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque; and to Tri-State Dialysis.

A special thank you to Dr. Whalen and all his staff at Tri-State Dialysis, the doctors at Medical Associates and the staff and pastoral care at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, for all of their care and support in the past four years.

A very special thanks to his many devoted friends, too numerous to mention, who made these last years meaningful and helped keep a sense of normalcy in John's life.
