James Weiss

James Edward Weiss, 86, of West Burlington, died at 9:56 PM Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at his home surrounded by family.

Born March 3, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Ervin and Julia Huppert Weiss. On May 7, 1955, he married Dana Lee Wagler at St. John's Church in Burlington.

He attended St. John's Elementary and St. Paul's High School.

James worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant until he was drafted in 1953. After his service, he worked for Monroe Calculating repairing machinery. In 1960, he went back to work at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant until he retired in 1996.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, he was drafted on his birthday, and served in England during the Korean War from March 3, 1953 until March 2, 1955.

Jim was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Knights of Columbus as a Black Knight. He served as an usher at Mass for may years. He was very involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, ice fishing, mushroom hunting, camping with his family and the Boy Scouts, and boating on the Mississippi River. Jim loved his John Deere mower and spent many hours working in his yard. He also enjoyed woodworking and creating things for his family and traveling to Texas with his wife for vacations. Jim was a hard worker and could fix anything.

Survivors include his wife, Dana of West Burlington; three sons, Bradley (Juli) Weiss, Brian (Earlene) Weiss, and Mark Weiss; one daughter, Laura Weiss; nine grandchildren, Melissa Weiss, Kyle Boyer, Benjamin (Maegan) Weiss, Shawna Ranney, Stephanie Ranney, Alison (Andrew) Price, Justin Weiss, Rachel Weiss, and Blake Cary; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert, Wallace and Richard Weiss, one sister, Marilyn Keller, and one great-grandson, Clayton Connelly.

He had many fond memories of the Weiss family reunions held at his sons, Brian or Brad's farm. When asked about the things he loved most, Jim said, "I love my family - they come first !"

The family to receive friends following 10:30 AM Rosary Service until 1:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Weiss will be 1:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the SS. Mary and Patrick Church Hall.

A memorial has been established for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
