John Kervyn Garnant, 87, of Burlington, died at 9:58 AM, Thursday, April 21, 2005, at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. Born January 14, 1918, in Hancock County, IA he was the son of Ralph J. and Hazel Wanda Bunting Garnant. He married Kathleen R. Brust on August 15, 1942 at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Burlington. Mr. Garnant graduated from Britt High School in 1936. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1937. He came to Burlington in 1941 as a recruiter. In 1944 he was activated for overseas duty in World War II just before the birth of his daughter. John returned home in October 1945 and was reactivated in August 1951 for the Korean conflict and was stationed at the Great Lakes until October 1952. He worked for the Iowa State employment service for 13 years, Mason-Hanger-Silas Mason Co. for 7 years prior to retiring from Rockwell International North American Space Operations in Palmdale, CA. He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, Knight of Columbus #568 and was a past member of other various social and military organizations. He was an avid golfer, St. Louis Rams and Cardinals fan and enjoyed playing and watching basketball. Survivors include his wife, Kay; one daughter, Judy (Wayne) Johnson of Burlington; six grandchildren, Joni (Mitch) Smith, Kim (Carlos) Capdevila, Jeff (Traci) Johnson, Ricky (Kelly) Johnson, Randy (Paulette) Johnson and Amy (Grant) Bonta; 15 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one great granddaughter, Alejandra Capdevila. As per his request his body has been cremated. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Sunday, April 24, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with a Rosary recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM. The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Garnant will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 25, at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel as the celebrant and Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the concelebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29. A memorial has been established for St. Vincent DePaul Society and his Church.

Visitation: Visitation: will begin at 9:00 AM with a Rosary recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM, Sunday, April 24, 2005 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home

Memorial: Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM, Monday, April 25, 2005 at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington
