DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Kenneth L. Pettinger, 73, of Dyersville, was called to his reward at 1:51 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, peacefully at home surrounded by his family, after a brief battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville, with the Rev. Dennis Quint and Deacon James Kean officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville, where there will be a flag presentation by the Dyersville American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1938, in Dyersville, son of Lawrence and Estella (Luehrsmann) Pettinger. He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier High School.

He married Carol Ann Friedman, on Oct. 1, 1960, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville.

Ken served in the Army Reserves for eight years, retired from John Deere Dubuque Works after 17 years and owned and operated the Cardinal Lounge for 35 years with Carol.

He was a life-long member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and the Dyersville Golf and Country Club. He also was a member of the Dyersville Garden Club and Sportsman Club. In 2003, he was inducted into the Eastern Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.

Ken was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Carol, of Dyersville; five children and their families, Kurt and Terri Pettinger, children, Tyler, Zachary, Alyson and Victoria, all of Manchester, Paul and Lara Pettinger, children, Ella, Noah and Christian, all of Dubuque, Nora Pettinger, of Minnetonka, Minn., Ross and Kristine Pettinger, children, Adam and Danielle, all of Friendswood, Texas, and Mark and Tracy Pettinger, children, Jackson, Allison and Samuel, all of Oxford; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Layton and Landyn; a sister, Mary Ann Savolt; a brother, Marvin and Carol Pettinger; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jane Pettinger-Commack, Jean and Bob Digmann, Verna Friedman, Mary Friedman and Bev and Lee Gehrke.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Natalie Pettinger; his parents, Lawrence and Estella Pettinger; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edmund and Amanda Friedman; a brother, Donald Pettinger; and a brother-in-law, John Savolt.
