DYERSVILLE, Iowa - John J. Goen, 71, of Dyersville, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Oak Crest Manor, Dyersville, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Ed Petty, officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m., and a Legion Post 137 service at 8 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1930, in Dubuque, son of Dr. Donald J. and Evelyn (Byrne) Goen, of Manchester, where he was raised. He married Jeanne M. Jenk on Aug. 27, 1955, in Dyersville.

He served in the Navy from 1950 to 1952. John attended Loras College, and then attended the Naval Academy. He graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in 1957, and was the Dubuque County Attorney from 1970 to 1972. He was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Legion Post 7736.

John practiced law in Dyersville with Jenk, Jenk, and Goen, and later Goen Law Office for 38 years until his retirement in 2001.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne; four daughters, Susan Goen, of Dyersville, Sally (Kevin) Knepper, of Farley, Margaret (Alan) Loeffelholz, of Granger, Ind., and Martha (Raleigh) Boll, of Santee, Calif., four sons, Donald (and his friend, Jen) Goen, of Appleton, Wis., John (and his friend, Robin) Goen, of Carefree, Ariz., Thomas (Brenda) Goen, of Belvedere, Ill., and Timothy Goen, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren, Max, Annan and Keely Knepper, Tyler, Nicole and Molly Loeffelholz, Brianna and Miranda Goen, and Kaleigh and McKenzie Boll; three step grandchildren, Destiny, Matt and Adam; two great grandchildren, Jack Knepper and Brice Ronek; and two sisters, Ellen (Michael) Mulroney, of Rosemont, Pa., and Sarah (Daniel) Barrett, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Wilson; and a brother and sister in infancy.
