Vance Albert Brooks

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. September 11, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa, for Vance Albert Brooks, 76, of Manchester, Iowa, who died on Friday, September 7, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Visitation was held from 2 to 8 p.m. September 10, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory in Manchester, with friends being able to call one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment, with Military Rites, was September 11, 2012 at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.

Vance Albert Brooks was born on June 10, 1936, near Arlington, the son of Albert Earl and Nellie Vione (Sargent) Brooks. Vance was raised and educated in the Arlington area, and graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1954.

On October 5, 1954, Vance enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Germany, until 1956.

Vance was united in marriage to Ruth Ardelle Ward on September 15, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Together they farmed ten years near Strawberry Point and then near Manchester. Vance also worked for Smitty’s Tire and Appliance for 22 years until he retired in 1997. He also worked for a short time at Walmart.

Vance was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Pleasant Point Grange where he held several offices. He enjoyed Hawkeye basketball, “Price is Right”, and “Wheel of Fortune”. Vance was an avid collector of hammers, saws, canes, and eagles.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ardelle Brooks of Manchester; 6 children, Connie (Jim) Haynes of Manchester, Tammie (Ben) Boone of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Teri (Ricardo) Mora of Guymon, Oklahoma, Jason (Lynet) Brooks of Kansas City, Missouri, Amy (Brian) Kuhn of Cedar Rapids, and Nicole Brooks of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Abbie and Vincent Haynes of Manchester, Benjamin and Tyler Boone of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Cristina Mora, Aaron (Stephanie) Mora, Briana and Kalisa Mora, all of Edmond, Oklahoma, Sydney Brooks of Kansas City, Missouri, and Makenzie and Lincoln Kuhn of Cedar Rapids; 4 great-grandchildren, Dalton Chambers, Aarebella Haynes, Carson Haynes, and Aislynne Boone; and 9 siblings, Verdis (John) Feller of Waterloo, Verlene Kelly of Manchester, ValJean Berg of Cedar Rapids, Verle “Buster” Brooks of Central City, Veronica Fugate of Cedar Rapids, Valetta (Harley) Radloff of Postville, Vaylard (Betty) Brooks of Strawberry Point, Vikki Welsh (special friend, Jim Fierstine) of Edgewood, and Victor Brooks (special friend, Misty Kahler) of Petaluma, California.

Vance was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Vincent Brooks, in infancy.
