Amata Irene (Lampe) Crawford was born June 22, 1935, in Dubuque, the daughter of R. K. and Miriam L. (Barta) Lampe. She grew up in Dubuque and attended the Dubuque public schools and the Finley School of Nursing. While working at the University of Iowa Hospitals, she met an engineering student, William J. Crawford of Mason City. They were married August 31, 1957, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque. They lived in Iowa City, Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Denison, Sheldon, and Marengo in Iowa, before settling in Manchester in 1965. Bill and Amata are the parents of three children: Daniel R., Timothy K., and Kate M.

Amata was a devoted mother and homemaker. She did work outside the home for a few years as a teacher’s aide at the kindergarten. She was a life-long Lutheran and was active in the First Lutheran Church until health problems slowed her down. In 1990, serious illness resulted in the loss of her left leg. Amata was a dedicated reader and collector of books.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Crawford of Manchester; her 3 children, Dan of Chicago, Tim of Simi Valley, California, and Kate (Mrs. Luis) Medina of Lincoln, Nebraska; 3 grandsons: Joshua, Nathaniel, and Andrew Medina of Lincoln, Nebraska; Tim's boy, Troy of Simi Valley, California; a sister, Lois Johnsgaard of Lincoln Nebraska; several nieces and nephews; and thousands of books.

Amata was preceded in death by her parents and an older brother, Kenneth Lampe.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manchester Public Library.
