Virgil D. Lewis, Sr.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. July 11, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa, for Virgil D. Lewis, Sr., 78, of Monticello, Iowa, formerly of Manchester, who died on Friday, July 6, 2012, at his residence in Monticello. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m., July 10, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Manchester, and one hour before the service on Wednesday. Interment was in St. Sebald Cemetery, rural Strawberry Point, Iowa.

Virgil D. Lewis was born on May 27, 1934, at Manchester, Iowa, the son of Russell and Ella (Coleson) Lewis . He was raised and educated in the Waterloo area, graduating from West Waterloo High School.

Virgil was united in marriage to Shirley See in 1954 and together they had 6 children. They later were divorced. In 1983 he married Marlene Utter. Marlene died in 1994. Virgil then married Brenda (Maker) Franks on May 13, 2002. Virgil was an electrician in Manchester. For the past 7 plus years, Virgil and Brenda have resided in Monticello.

Virgil enjoyed his work as an electrician; he also enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Lewis of Monticello; his 6 children, Virgil “Duane” (Darcy) Lewis, Jr. of Waterloo, John (Melissa) Lewis of Delhi, Brenda (Thomas) Polson of Cedar Falls, Angie (Tom) Smith of Waterloo, Sandra Tanner of Dubuque, and Teresa (David) Gerken of Cedar Falls; 3 step-children, Robert Franks (finance, Tina) of DeWitt, Stephanie Franks of DeWitt, and Ryan Franks of Marion, Alabama; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and 3 brothers, Dick (Harriet) Lewis and Darrel (Barb) Lewis, both of Waterloo, and David (Nancy) Lewis of Riverside, California.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Marlene; one sister, Alyce Walter; and 3 brothers, James, Bryce, and Edward.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the funeral home to help with costs.
