Myrtle R. Smith, 78, a Manchester resident the past 21 years, died Thursday at Delaware County Memorial hospital following a brief illness.
Born July 28, 1889, near Hopkinton, she was the daughter of Tillman and Minerva Martin Grapes. She attended Pleasant Valley rural school in Delaware county. On March 24, 1915, she was married to Archie N. Smith.
Mrs. Smith taught in Delaware county rural school for five years, and she worked as a cook at the Elite cafe for seven years.
She is survived by a son, Dewayne Smith of Manchester; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Van Auken of Manchester, Mrs Carrie Bradke and Mrs John Ratcliff of Hopkinton, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie, two sisters and two brother.
Funeral services were Saturday afternoon in Gospel Hall, with Paul Elliott and Leonard De Buhr officiating. Burial was made in Buck Creek cemetery. The Gill-Bohnenkamp funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
