In Response To: Joseph Stephenson family -DeWitt 1857-1863 (Barb Kelley)

Barb, Just a couple fyi's to possibly assist you in your Clinton co. research. Joseph & Sophia lived in Washington twp.in 1860. The P.O. serving the area was De Witt which is in De Witt twp. just so. of Washington twp. Joseph M. did not attain citizenship by benefit of serving in the civil war. He still had to file his first and final papers. All service in the U.S. military for the foreign born did was shorten the residency requirements period for filing these papers. If the senior Joseph did file papers his wife & minor children were included in his request so you won't find naturalization papers on them. If the senior Joseph did file for naturalization, it probably was in R.I. co. I don't think they were in the Clinton co area long enough. You might want to contact Ann Soenksen at the Central Community Historical Society in De Witt for any assistance she can provide. They do have listings for all Clinton co. cemeteries. Dick
