DEWITT — Richard “Dick” Porth, 80, of DeWitt, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.A funeral mass will be Monday, February 2, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, DeWitt, Iowa with Rev. H. Robert Harness as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound, Iowa. Pallbearers will be Rikki Kastner, Chad Oerman, Ryan, Brandon, Jeff, Jordan and Jared Porth.Memorials may go to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.Family will meet friends and family on Sunday, February 1, 2009 from 2 until 5 pm. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Gathering Space, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 417 6th Avenue, DeWitt, Iowa. A prayer service by Sister Theresa Ann Spitz will follow the visitation. Richard R. Porth was born Jan.1, 1929 in rural Calamus, Iowa. He was the son of Carl and Viola (Peters) Porth. Dick attended Porth School in Olive Township through 8th grade, and graduated from Calamus High School in 1946. Dick served in the Army during the Korean War as a MP. He was selected to serve on the honor guard at West Point in NY. Still having a year of service remaining he married Betty Determan on Nov. 14, 1953 in Clinton, Iowa. Dick and Betty farmed on Dick’s parent’s homestead near Calamus, Iowa many years. Dick spent 18 years employed at Chemplex Corporation, shipping department, until his retirement. Dick’s memberships include St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he served as Eucharist minister, president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Scott County where he worked the telethon for many years, the American Legion, K.C’s and sportsman club. Dick loved golfing and after moving to DeWitt, he walked everyday and enjoyed visiting with everyone along the way. Dick will be missed by his family and friends.Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Betty of 56 years, sons; Rick(Debbie) Porth, Streamwood, Ill., Mark (Maria) Porth, Grand Rapids, Michigan and Scott (Carla) Porth, DeWitt, Iowa and a daughter, Roxanne (Gary) Oerman, Eldridge, Iowa. 10 grandchildren; Ryan, Brandon, Rick, Jeffery, Julia, Ashley, Chad, Whitney, Jared and Jordan, 2 great grand-children; Bailey and Audrey, and 2 sisters, Betty (Windham) Hill, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Dorothy (Don) Kettering, Davenport, Iowa.Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Bob. Death date: Jan. 28, 2009
