Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17, at the Rhines funeral home in Edgewood for Mrs. Freeman H. Harris of Colesburg, who died Wednesday at the Oneida nursing home. Officiating was the Rev. Everett McFarlane of Oelwein. Burial was at Bethel cemetery near Osterdock, birthplace and girlhood home of the deceased.
Vocalists were Mrs. Myrtle Lane and Mrs. Clark Shaffer of Colesburg, accompanied by Miss Edith Merten. Casket bearers were: Fred Mitzner, Merton Phelps, Jack Troester, Martin Friedlein, Charles Conner and Ben Kulper, all of Colesburg. Mrs. Fred Mitzner and Mrs. Mildred Peck were in charge of flowers.
Although in frail health for several years, Mrs. Harris was active except for the past three months, most of which were spent at Universit hospital, Iowa City, where she underwent surgery about three weeks ago for amputation of her right leg. She appeared to be recovering and only the day before her death she had been removed to a nursing home at Oneida. Her sudden death Wednesday forenoon was ascribed to pulmonary embolism.
Mrs. Freeman H. Harris, daughter of William and Maria Hansel, was born February 23, 1879, at Osterdock, Clayton county, Iowa, and died September 14, 1955, at Oneida, Delaware county, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 22 days. She had been hospitalized for several months preceding her death.
She lived in the Osterdock community until her marriage, after which most of her life was spent in and around Colesburg. On September 17, 1899, she was united in marriage to Freeman H. Harris and to this union were born three daughters and one son. The oldest child, Florence, died at the age of nine years.
Survivors are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Lela) Johnson of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. A. D. (Neva) O'Neal of Dubuque, and her son Harold of Sutherland. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Belle We__on of Olean, N.Y.
Mrs. Harris was for many years a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
