Military services for Charles Lyman Pettit of Portland, Ore., were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery with the American Legion and V.F.W. in charge of the grave-side services.
Charles Lyman Pettit, 37, died at his home in Portland, Ore., on Feb. 13, 1953 following a heart attack.
Lyman was born at Magnolia, Ill., June 13, 1915, the son of James and Mae Pettit.
In his youth the family moved to Oelwein, Iowa and in 1929 the family moved to Elkader.
During his high school years in Elkader Lyman was prominent in all athletics and was a member of the championship football team in 1932.
After a year at Upper Iowa University, where he was a member of the undefeated football team, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Jeffers of Elkader on April 06, 1935.
He was associated with Wilson & Co., at Oelwein, Iowa, Lanark, Ill., and Eagle Grove, Iowa until he entered the navy Feb. 01, 1944. Upon his return, after spending 22 months in the service, he was employed by Priebe & Son at Sac City, Iowa.
After a year and a half he was promoted to the state office of the United States production and marketing administration of the state of Oregon.
Besides his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by two sons, Jeffery and Bradford; his parents, James and Mae Pettit, and a sister, Mrs. Gerald (Florence) Poull.
Pallbearers were: Richard Wolf, Don Wolf, Don Witt, Frank Gates, Dale Pettit and Elmo Pettit.
