Herman H. Dettmer, 80, prominent farmer and former manager of the Garnavillo Commission Co., died at his home, Jan. 24, following a heart attack. He was actively engaged in farming until two weeks before his death.

Mr. Dettmer was born in Read township Aug. 23, 1872, the son of Henry and Mary Brandt Dettmer. In 1897 he was married to Minnie Meier. The couple celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary last Dec. 09.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Evelyn Gull, Mrs. Lulu Leitgen of Garnavillo and Mrs. Olive Smith of Central City; eight grandchildren: Fannie May and Larry Gull, Loyal, Robert and Lu Rae Leitgen, Mary Ann, James and John Smith. Also for sisters: Mrs. Emma Wirkler, Miss Helen Dettmer, Mrs. Alvin Kregel of Garnavillo and Mrs. Anna Schmidt of Elkader.

Funeral services were eld Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 28, at the Gospel Hall with Oliver Smith officiating. Burial was in the Garnavillo cemetery.
