Helena Mertens, daughter of Fred Mertens and his wife, Fredericka, nee Batens, was born on February 27, 1870, in Saxony, Germany. Shortly after her birth, she was baptized into the name of the Triune God.
As a young girl she came to America with her parents, attended confirmation school in Clayton Center and on March 29, 1886 she was confirmed at Zion Lutheran church, Clayton Center, by the Rev. F. W. Seifert.
On December 20, 1889, she was united in marriage to Henry Moeller. For some time they lived on a farm east of Farmersburg, and then moved to a farm south of National. The deceased continued to live on this farm until 1926. In this year her husband died. Shortly after this, she left the farm and moved to her home in Farmersburg. She continued to live in her home in Farmersburg until she became ill and it was necessary for her to go to the hospital.
She was taken to the hospital at McGregor on Jan. 28, 1957. On April 04, she was transferred to the mental health institution at Independence for care. There she died on Saturday morning, Oct. 26, 1957, having reached the age of eighty-seven years, seven months and thirty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, and three brothers.
She is survived by her three children, John of Farmersburg, William of Monona, and Mrs. August (Amelia) Werger of McGregor; three sisters, Mrs. Amos (Mary) Zabel, and Mrs. Emma Mardans of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Mrs. Anna Morley of Osterdock; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 2:00 p.m., in St. John Lutheran church, Farmersburg, with the Rev. R. H. Steege officiating.
