Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Phelps were held Saturday afternoon, from the M.E. church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. E.E. Clements. Vocal selections: 'Some Day We'll Understand' and 'The Old Rugged Cross' were sung by Misses Myrtle Klaus and Leona Kuhlman, with Mrs. E.E. Clements at the piano.

The Rebekahs attended in a body, and assisted with the services at the church. Sons of the deceased supported the casket, and burial was made at Oak Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Phelps passed away Thursday, May 7, 1936, at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 27 days. Her death occurred at the State hospital at Independence following a long period of ill health and a serious illness of almost a year.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Fishel, she was born July 10, 1871, at Wood, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood. On March 4, 1889 she was united in marriage, at Elkader, with Wilbur Phelps of Colesburg.

They began their home life on the Phelps homestead north-west of town where they resided until retiring and moving to town in 1927. Mr. Phelps passed away in December 1929, and two sons died in early childhood.

Surviving are six sons and six daughters - Lincoln and Mrs. Lucille Meyers of Puyallup, Wash.; Levi of Cassville, Wis.; Mrs. Sylvia Jaster and Mrs. Stella Knospe of Elkport; Mrs. Mary Cole of La Porte City; Mrs. Clarence Ahrens of Edgewood; Martin of Woodstock, Ill.; Merten and Otto of Colesburg; Mrs. Opal Lau of Waukon; and Wilbur of Iowa City; 35 grandchildren, three great grand-children; one brother Martin Fishel of Palo, Iowa; one sister Mrs. O.B. Sprague of Edgewood; beside many more distant relatives. She leaves many old-time friends and acquaintances who will recall her with tender memories.

During her active life, when time and health permitted, Mrs. Phelps took an interest in affairs aside from home and tasks. She was a member of the local Rebekah lodge for many years, and also of the Twentieth Century Review club. She became a member of the Colesburg M.E. church in 1923, under the pastorate of the Rev. W.H. Smith.

Her last years were spent under the shadow of a great affliction. Now tired and weary of her world, dark and dreary, she has gone to a region more bright, she has entered the mansions of light. Peace to her memory.

Note: The Phelps homestead was in Malloy twp.
