Mrs. Fred Smith, nee Mary Ann Rentschler, daughter of Emma Rentschler and Jacob Rentschler, was born on a farm near Colesburg on Feb. 05, 1890. On September 16, 1908, she married Fred Smith in Manchester, Iowa. They first lived on a farm between Elkport and Littleport, and Mary remained there until her recent death.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Rentschler, in 1931, her husband, Fred Smith, in 1937, her mother, Emma Rentschler, in 1944, and her brother Delbert in 1948. Her son-in-law, Louis Hinrichs, died in March of this year. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were the parents of one daughter, Florence, with whom Mrs. Smith had made her home for the past twenty years.
Mrs. Smith died August 01, 1957, on the family farm at the age of sixty-seven years, five months, and twenty-five days. She lived her whole life in this area of Iowa. She was a member of the St. John's E and R church of Garber, and a diligent worker in the Women's Guild of that church.
Survivors include her daughter, Florence Hinrichs; her sister, Norma Harbaugh; her brothers, Rudolph, Clyde, George, and Mark Rentschler and their wives; her grandchildren, Dean, Joann, Sharon, Phyllis, and Keinth Hinrichs; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
The funeral was conducted in the St. John's E and R church of Garber by Richard Kauppinen, student pastor. Pallbearers were: Lelund Steen, Don Liddy, Eldon Kruse, Art Meier, Wm. Refle, and Julius Kraus.
