Funeral services for Leo F. Niemeyer, 55, were held here Monday morning, May 20, from Witt's Chapel at 9:30 o'clock to St. Joseph Catholic church at 10 o'clock, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. A. Gorman officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery.
The V.F.W. and American Legion were in charge of military services conducted at the graveside.
Niemeyer died early Friday morning following a fall. He had been at the Legion club, Thursday evening and it is believed to have suffered a heart attack as he was leaving the club later in the evening. Near midnight he was found at the foot of the stairway that leads to the club rooms.
He was placed in an ambulance which started for the hospital at Oelwein. He passed away when the ambulance was only several miles south of town and was returned to Elkader.
Leo was a son of Frank A. and Christine Hoxmeier Niemeyer and was born in Elkader on September 11, 1901. He was a graduate of the Elkader high school. In 1926 he and his brother, Norbert, took over the general store that had been operated by their father. This partnership continued until September 14, 1942, when Leo entered the armed forces of World War II. At that time he sold his merchandising interests to his brother.
In the army he served as an airplane and engine mechanic in a technical service squadron at Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas and at Walker Air Field, Victoria, Kansas. After returning from service Niemeyer became an assistant in the parts department of the L. D. Dittmer Motor company in Elkader and continued in this capacity until the time of his death.
Besides his mother, Niemeyer is survived by his brother, Norbert, and four sisters, Mrs. _. _. (Georgia) Uriell, of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. E. G. (Marguerite) Borgen, of Des Moines, and the Misses Helena and Delores Niemeyer, of Elkader.
His father preceded him in death on March 04, 1952.
Pall bearers were: L. D. Dittmer, Dr. L. A. Meder, Floyd Dittmer, Ed Finley, George Schmidt and Julius Mentzel.
Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral included: Miss Susan Hoxmeier and Dominic Hoxmeier, of Alton; Mrs. Peter Welch and children, Delores and Joseph, of Bellevue; Paula Kunkel, of Dyersville; Mrs. Wm. Lampe and Mrs. Joseph Gonner, of Bellevue; Mr. and Mrs. Dan O'leary, of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Uriell and Frank G. Uriell, of Evanston, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Borgen, of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. David G. Borgen, of Omaha, Nebr.; the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen, of Dyersville.
