Edward Fredrick Samuel Donath, 86, died at his home in Strawberry Point on April 21, following a long illness. Born September 12, 1870, he was the son of Godfried and Marie (Aukschun) Donath. He was married to Marie Fliehler at St. Sebald on May 15, 1892. He had worked for nearly fifty years as a smithy in Elkader, West Union, Mederville, Osborne and Strawberry Point. He had moved here more than twenty years ago and continued with his blacksmith shop until a few years ago when ill heath prevented him from continuing.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 24, at 2:00 p.m., in the Gill chapel. Burial was at St. Sebald cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Nora, a son Orvel, and two children who died in infancy. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bert (Lydia) Rogers of Cedar Falls, and Miss Eva Donath of Strawberry Point, one son, Richard of Elkader, one sister, Mrs. Augusta Fliehler of Strawberry Point, one half-sister, Mrs. Otillie Allen of Davenport, one half-brother, Emil Rebaschus of Fresno, Calif., 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
