Clayton County Register, 24 Jan. 1957.

Last Member Of Class Of 1886 Dies.

Ashes of Jessie Vaupel Bicknell Interred at East Side Cemetery.

The class of 1886 at Elkader high school is now but a memory. The ashes of its last member were interred at East Side cemetery, in Elkader, Monday, January 21.

Mrs. Jessie Vaupel Bicknell, the last of seven students who graduated from Elkader high nearly 71 years ago, died at her home in Long Beach, Calif., on December 28.

According to her wish, her ashes were returned to the scene of her girlhood. They arrived here last Monday. No services were held for the interment, also her wish.

Only last November Mrs. Bicknell sent a check for $1,000.00 to Elkader to be placed in trust for the East Side cemetery association. The income from this trust is to be used for cemetery maintenance.

Mrs. Bicknell spent her girlhood days in Elkader where her father, J. C. Vaupel, was associated with the Clayton County treasurer's office prior to the turn of the century. After graduating from high school she was married to Frank Bicknell, who was a member of the Des Moines Register staff for many years.

In her declining years she had made her home in California. Her graduating class, all of whom preceded Mrs. Bicknell in death were: Anna Davidson Lusk, Mattie Everall, Minnie Leach Becker, Jennie Eno Hocking, Mattie Siebertz Prior and Frank Whitney.

(Note: See also, the obit of Vaupel, Clara (Sandzanger) died 1921, on this obit board.)

The photo of Mrs. Bicknell is from pg. 1 of the Clayton County Register, 24 Jan. 1956, and was printed with an article detailing the bequest of $1,000 that she made to the Ladies Cemetery association in 1956. It is her Elkader high school graduation photo as a member of the Class of 1886.
