Clayton County Register, 10 Sept. 1941.

Funeral services were held for Gilbert T, Ulberg at the Norway church on Sept. 03, with the Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiating.

Gilbert Tollefson Ulberg, the youngest child of Tollef and Burgit Ulberg, was born in Opdal, Numedal, Norway, Oct. 20, 1865. When but a small boy, with his parents and brothers and sisters, he came to the United States and settled in Clayton county, first making his home with Torkelson Peterson and family for a short time. Later they settled on the farm purchased and owned by them until April 08, 1927, when they sold the home to Tore Kirkjorden.

The father was a weaver by trade and was taken by death a few years after their immigration.

The oldest son, Tollef, remained with the mother, taking the father's place in the home and on the farm. The second son, Giesley, became a cripple in early childhood and was unable, physically, to do his part in the work and died June 08, 1924.

The other children were able and industrious and not only contributed of their time and labor on the farm and in the home but scattered out working here and there. Home, however, was their haven, and they gathered there on the Sabbath Day.

Two sisters - Alice Ulberg and Mrs. Tillie Peterson _ were twins and the children of the latter are the only remaining near relatives of the deceased. They are Mrs. Julia Koons of Elkader and Perry Peterson, Elkader, and Mrs. Alice Niles of Cedar Rapids.

Peter, the fourth child, was a jeweler in St. Olaf for several years to the time of his death on Oct. 28, 1915; Carrie became the wife of Hans Hanson, Tollef, Alice and Gilbert moved to St. Olaf after selling the farm but Tollef for only six months when he died from heart trouble. Alice, too, died April 20, 1935.

Gilbert continued to live alone until April, last year, when his sister and husband - Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hanson - moved to his home, but Mrs. Hanson was taken by death the following September.

Oct. 13, 1940, he went to the Lutheran hospital in LaCrosse (Wis.) for an operation but owing to a condition of hardening of the arteries he failed to recover and gradually became weaker. On Dec. 09th he was brought to the Lenth hospital in Elkader, where medical aid and nurse's care were given him until his death, Sunday, Aug. 31.

Gilbert Ulberg was an upright, honest and industrious man, commanding and retaining the respect of every child and person in the community and making friends wherever he went.
