Carl J. L. Staack, a pioneer of this county and one of the oldest members of Zion's Lutheran church at Clayton Center, died at his home at Clayton Center, Sunday, June 15, at the age of 88 years, seven months and 23 days.
Carl Johann Ludwig Staack was born October 22, 1852, in Zierzow, Mecklenburg-Schwerien, the son of Johann Ludwig and Elisa (Schmidt) Staack. In the year 1882 he came to this country and settled at once in this county, at Clayton Center, which has since been his home.
March 21st, 1882, he was united in marriage with Sophia Paegel who survives him together with three daughters and two sons, namely, Mrs. Sophia Dahl, St. Olaf; Mrs. Anna Hagensick and Mrs. Chas. Gossman, both of Elkader; Wm. L. Staack, St. Olaf and Arthur H. Staack, Mederville. One brother, Wm. Staack, Germany, eight grandchildren and two grandchildren (great-grandchildren ?) also survive.
The deceased received his early education in his native land and learned the trade of blacksmith which he followed as long as he was able. He served his community on the school board and was also a member of the church board.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Zion's Lutheran church and burial was made in Clayton Center cemetery, the Rev. Mr. Ludwig of Postville officiating. Casketbearers were: Harold Seeland, Merlin Nading, John Kuehl, Alvin Olson, Harold Dahl and Valmah Gossman.
