Friends were surprised Sunday evening when it was learned that George Steward, who made his home with his daughter, Mrs. August Schmidt near Arlington, died, while conversing with friends at the Savage garage at Arlington. Death was due to a heart attack. A prayer service was conducted at the Schmidt home Wednesday afternoon followed by service being conducted by Rev. Thomas P. Shaffer, pastor of the Methodist church at Manchester. The hymns were sung by Mrs. Kenneth Esch and Mrs. Bert W. Talcott with Mrs. Robert B. Leachman playing the accompaniment. The pallbearers were A. J. Stamp, E. G. Eppler, Frank Wilder, M. G. Arnold, J. R. Tracy, and S. F. Schoentag. Burial was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
George O., son of James and Mary Steward was born at Lime Ridge, Wisconsin on March 28, 1863. In 1875 he came with his parents to Strawberry Point and settled on a farm three miles west of here. On October 30, 1887, he was united in marriage to Ida C. Stringer. To this union three children were born.
Mr. and Mrs. Steward farmed in the same community for thirty-four years when they retired and made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Schmidt near Arlington. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren, relatives and friends in the local I.O.O.F. in 1937. Mrs. Steward died January 22, 1940. Mr. Steward was assessor of Cass Township for several years. Surviving are the three children: Mrs. Nelson F. Stamp of Manchester, Howard V. Steward of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. August (Helen) Schmidt of near Arlington; five grandchildren, Mrs. Marion (Helen) Huntley and Merle Stamp of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Harold (Lavon) Linderwell and Lawrence Steward of Strawberry Point and Vernon Schmidt of near Arlington and one great-grandchild, Beverly Ann Linderwell; also three sisters, Mrs. Flora Tracy and Mrs. Mary E. Tracy, both of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Hattie Livingston of Hopkinton. Two brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
Among the relatives from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mrs. Dora Stewart, Mrs. Ed Strate and William Sullivan of Belvidere, Ill., Mrs. Dr. Huberta Livingston Adams of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Robert Green of Sutherland, Mrs. Hattie Livingston of Hopkinton, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hatch and Charles Anderson of Oelwein, and Mrs. L. L. Reid of Westgate.
