LITTLEPORT: Burial services for Mrs. Karoline Hakert were held Monday afternoon at the Hope Lutheran church with the Rev. Kenyon officiating. Interment was made in the Mederville cemetery. Mrs. Hakert was stricken with a heart attack the evening of Feb. 27 and died the following evening at 7:10 at the age of 77 years, one month and 22 days.
Karoline Elise Augusta Mathilda Thieda, the daughter of Christian and Dorathea, nee Rathke Thieda, was born Jan. 06, 1864 in Lenzerwisahe, Germany. Two weeks later on Jan. 21 she was baptized in St. John's Lutheran church of that city, and after a course of instructions she was duly confirmed on April 14, 1878 by Supt. Friedrich Kober in her home congregation in Lenzewisahe.
On Dec. 27, 1884 she married Karl Heindich Hakert and as a young bride sailed for this country soon after marriage. The couple arrived in New York City, April 11, 1885 and immediately came to Clayton county, Iowa, settling in Littleport. For some years after arriving in Littleport Mr. Hakert was connected with the railroad but later returned to farming in this community. In 1916 they retired from the farm and moved back to Littleport, where Mr. Hakert died Feb. 22, 1915.
Since Mr. Hakert's death the deceased had kept house for her son William until last fall when she came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Kofer.
Mrs Hakert was a member of the Lutheran Church throughout her life and helped establish this congregation. She was also a charter member of the Frauen Verein. Her five children: Otto, Charles, William, Edward and Elsie, now Mrs. Paul Kofer, all of whom live in or near Littleport. She also leaves 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous friends.
Pallbearers were Marvin Hakert, Herman Hakert, Geo. Hakert, Earl Hakert, Wm. Freitag and Alvin Klinkenberg. Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bowmann Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Baumann Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Baumann and Wm. Baumann all from Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hormann and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goers from Dundee, Ill.
