The death of Augustus Dillon, 87, occurred Tuesday, Sept. 28, at his home in town following an illness of several months.
He was born Jan. 27, 1861, in Cox Creek township, the son of Bartholomew and Rosanna Dillon. His parents were born in County Meath, Ireland, and came to this country in the early days and settled at Cox Creek. Before the Sacred Heart church was built at Cox Creek, mass was celebrated in their home. Mr. Dillon served as alter boy at the first mass in the Cox Creek church many years ago.
On Aug. 06, 1894, he was married to Miss Ada Hines at Strawberry Point. They established their home in Volga several years ago, where they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944.
Mr. Dillon's main interest in life was his church and family.
He is survived by his wife, five sons and four daughters; namely, Mrs. D. E. (Addie) Kenneally, Elkader; Mrs. Charles (Marie) Otterbeck, Strawberry Point; Mrs. L. J. (Helen) Berns, Lamont; Mrs. Selmer (Grace) Olson, Elkader; Lloyd, Wesley, Clair and Reid, Strawberry Point; and George of Oelwein. Also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kathryn Dillon, wife of Paul Dillon, who preceded his father in death Dec. 16, 1944, 27 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Tom Dillon, of Stockton, Calif.
Services were held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, where a requiem high mass was celebrated by the pastor, the Rev. D. T. Noonan. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery at Strawberry Point.
Casket bearers were Mr. Dillon's five sons and son-in-law, Lloyd, Wesley, Reid, Clair and George Dillon, and Selmar Olson.
Among the out-of-town relatives at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Lawlor, Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Berns, Lohrville; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Duncan, West Bend; Mrs. John Cowie, Ottumwa; Dr. and Mrs. B. J. Dillon, Waukon; Leo Kenneally, Minneapolis; and Ted Leete, Wadena, Minn.
