National, May 20th, 1868 - Mr. James McGrady of this town (Farmersburg) died on the 15th inst., aged 78 years, of Dysentery.
He was a native of the North of Ireland, came to America about the year 1822, lived in Canada and Northern Vermont until 1851, since then a resident of Iowa.
A kind and generous friend, a good citizen, an obliging neighbor, an indulgent father, and respected by all.
He leaves two sons, and a whole community to mourn. His funeral was attended on Sunday by the largest congregation I have ever seen in this place.
C. Watkins~North Iowa Times, Wednesday, May 27, 1868; pg 2
Notes: He & his wife Sophia, both born Ireland are enumerated on the 1860 U.S. census, National, Farmersburg twp. His age was shown to be 68y and her age 58. Also in the household are sons John M. (32) and James (31). All of the men were Shoemakers. A Plot Map of the National cemetery shows that one of the lots was owned by John McGrady - it is possible that the elder James McGrady was buried there, but confirmation has not been made.
