Funeral services for Mrs. Frank McGruder, 70, were held from St. Joseph church, Elkader, at 9:30 Friday morning, July 09. Her nephew the Rev. Father Virgil Roach, S. J., of Milwaukee, Wis., officiated at the requiem mass. The Very Rev. Bernard H. Skahill preached the sermon and officiated at the grave. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery.

Mrs. McGruder died at Mercy hospital, Dubuque, Wednesday, July 07, where she had been taken on Friday. She had been in ill health for the past seven months.

Catherine Roach, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Roach, was born in Highland township Feb. 09, 1878. She received her education in the school near her home. For a number of years she was a teacher in the rural schools of Clayton county.

In 1898, at St. Joseph church, Elkader, she was married to Patrick Orr, who preceded her in death in 1902. One son was born to this union, Francis J. Orr, now of Chicago.

In 1922 she married Frank McGruder. She had spent her entire life in and around Elkader. She was a member of St. Joseph church and also a member of the Ladies Guild of that church.

She is survived by her husband, Frank McGruder; a son and a daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Orr, Chicago; one brother, John L. Roach, Omaha, Nebr.; and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Finley, Elkader, Sister M. Stanislaus and Sister M. Leo, both of the presentation Order Sisters, Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael, William, and Frank Roach, and one sister, Anna.

Pallbearers were six nephews, Ed Finley, John, Leo, LuVern and Paul Roach, and Francis McGruder.

Relatives and friends who attended the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Orr, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Nulty, son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Stempson, Mr. and Mrs. Leo McGruder and son, Joe Martin, John Sheridan and Family, Ed Sheridan and family, Lawler; Mr. and Mrs. Finnegan and family, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Thompson, Maynard; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kalb and family, Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Etteldorf, Mrs. Sophia Scanell, Monona; Julius Scanell and son, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Roach, Elkport; Fred Orr and Frances, Vola.
