Clayton County Register, 11 Mar. 1948.
John Roys, eldest of 15 children of Sarah Black and John Roys, was born at South Leverton, Retford, Nottinghamshire, England, April 20, 1860 and died March 05, 1948 at the Walter Roys home west of Volga. Early in life he united with the Wesleyan Methodist church.
In December 1888, he and his brother Samuel Roys came to the United States, and to the Wm. Crain and Sons farm east of Volga. Here Uncle John, as he was familiarly known, was employed for 21 1/2 years.
On June 07, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Thoday and they started housekeeping on his farm north of Volga, where they lived until Mrs. Roys' death in March 1931.
In 1933, Uncle John went to make his home with his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roys.
He enjoyed comparatively good health until seven years ago when he suffered a year's illness which left him much less active. He was more lonely after the death of his old friend William Bennington a few weeks ago. He was tenderly cared for during his two weeks' illness, but shortly after noon of March 05, he quietly died.
He is survived by five brothers: Ben, of Volga; William, Sterling, Colo; Walter, Wadena; Joe and Thomas, in England: also two sisters in England: Mildred Flear and Ruth Keeling, and many relatives and friends. His parents, five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Six nephews: Bernard, Kenneth, Lyle, John Dale, John Ben and Henry Roys acted as casket bearers at the funeral services which were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. The pastor, the Rev. Ben Cochenet, was in charge. Mrs. R. W. Duff and Mrs. Archie Fox provided the music.
Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.
