Clayton County Register, 12 Sept. 1946.
VOLGA: Joe K. McDonald, 35, was injured fatally Monday night around 9 o'clock when the motorcycle he was riding south on main street in Volga crashed into a truck that was parked near the opera house corner. It is thought he swerved out of the way of a car that was backing out from the curb, and in so doing crashed into the side of the parked truck.
Citizens heard the crash and a physician was summoned immediately. They started for the Oelwein hospital but the injured man died enroute.
He and his family resided on the W. M. Hoskyn farm five miles south of Volga.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Hoskyn, an eleven-month-old daughter, Kay; his step-father and mother, Rep. and Mrs. S. G. Hoeness of Winterset; one brother and two sisters.
