STRAWBERRY POINT: William Vernon Smith, 77, died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's sanitarium, Dubuque, where he was taken four days before. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Smith, he was born December 03, 1868 in Ohio and came to Iowa with his parents when he was two years of age. On February 29, 1896 he was married to Fannie Puffett. They farmed in Putnam township. Mrs. Smith died April 27, 1928. He was again married to Mrs. Bessie Nichols in November 1929. They retired to Strawberry Point in 1932.
Survivors are his wife, a son Clifford of Lamont, two brothers, George Smith of Oelwein, and Arthur Smith of Jefferson, Wis., a sister Mrs. Alice Lickless of Alberta, Canada, a step-daughter Mrs. Elgie Rulon of Davenport, three step-sons Lester Nichols of Cedar Rapids; Elmer Nichols of Chicago; Carl Nichols of Davenport.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. R. Park Anderson in the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. Special music was furnished by Mrs. Hannah Talcott and Miss Leola Carter, accompanied by Mrs. Lloyd Kamer.
Casket bearers were: Howard Steward, Ernest Eppler, George Dunfrund, Carl Buls, Will Arnold and Jack Klingbeil. Burial was in Union cemetery.
