Mrs. John Leonard, 56, died Thursday morning at the home of her niece, Mrs. Jake Lehman in Elgin where she has been cared for since her dismissal from the University hospital in Iowa City three weeks ago.
Mary Hofer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Hofer, was born June 07, 1889 at Elgin. On April 09, 1914, she was married at Elkader to John Leonard. They farmed in this community the past twenty-five years. Surviving are the husband, two daughters Mrs. Gordon Olson and Mrs. Alfred Burrack, both of Arlington, six grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Pauline Dennler, Mrs. Rose Dennler and Mrs. Charles Odegard, all of Elgin, Mrs. Mark Achelmire and Mrs. Ben Clark in California, two brothers, Ben Hofer of Elgin and Fred Hofer of Elkader. A son Alfred was killed over Romania May 31, 1944 while serving in the Air Corps. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon. Casket bearers were Howard Elwell, Richard Fitzpatrick, Louie Meyers, Phil Wood, William Swisher and Ray Thomas. Burial was in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
