Mrs. Sarah Roys, third daughter of Robert and Isabelle Duff, was born on the home farm northwest of Volga on March 02, 1865. She lived in Highland township until the last four years of her life. She was educated in the rural schools and attended Decorah college two years. For a number of years she was engaged in the teaching of school.
On Sept. 25, 1893 she was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel Roys. Mr. and Mrs. Roys adopted two children, Clifford and Elizabeth Roys, and made a home for another, Henry Wolven. Mr. Roys passed away on March 16, 1930. Since that time Mrs. Roys made her home with her brother, Thomas Duff.
Many years ago Sarah Roys united with the Presbyterian church when it met in Highland, and has been an energetic worker in the church life since that time. For some time Mrs. Roys has not enjoyed good health, but managed to carry on her work in the household with unusual courage. She died during the forenoon of May 29, 1942, at the age of 77 years, 2 months, 27 days. Those of the immediate relatives who remain are: one son, Clifford Roys of LaCrosse, Wis., one daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Sigler of Westgate, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Celia McKeen of Coleridge, Nebr., and a brother Thomas Duff of Volga, besides many other relatives and many friends in this community.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon, May 31, at the Volga Presbyterian church in charge of the pastor, Rev. Russell Nelson. Burial was made in the Hillcrest cemetery.
Casket-bearers were John Duff, William Smith, John Zuercher, Andy Yearous, William Dempster and William Nydegger.
Among those attending the funeral from out-of-town included: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ritter, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. John Zuercher and daughter Jean, Lamont; Kenneth Duff, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson, Arlington; Clifford Roys, LaCrosse, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Zeigler and family, Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Muncie and Florence, Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Quinn, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tschantz and Mrs. A__a Leonhart, Wadena.
