George Koether was born in Alfdorf, Germany, Nov. 03, 1861. He was educated in the village school until he was 14 years of age. On April 17, 1875, he was confirmed.
Mr. Koether sailed from Breman, Germany on the German steamer Lloyd September 19, 1879 and landed in New York City, Sept. 26th. After a stay of only three days in New York City he left for the west and arrived at Beulah, Iowa, October 05, 1879. He worked at the Shellhammer mill at Beulah for about two years.
On February 05, 1895, he was married to Anna Wickersheim. For two years they lived on a farm south of Froelich and then moved to Giard, March 01, 1897.
Mr. Koether became a citizen of the United States, Oct. 24, 1894. He was active in the Methodist church and its Sunday school class for almost 50 years. He was a man who was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Three children were born in the Koether family, all of whom, with their mother, survive. They are: Mrs. D. N. Olmsted of McGregor; Luella of Chungking, China; and Ed. who lives on the home farm. There are three grandchildren, Edna, Margaret and Philip Olmsted.
