Mrs. Wm. F. Walter died at her home here in Elkader, Tuesday, May 19th, of a heart ailment. Though she had been ailing for about a year she was not confined to her bed until a week ago.
Sophie Wilhelmina, the daughter of Bernhardt and Sophie Buckman, was born February 11, 1874, in Germany, and so, at the time of her death reached the age of 68 years, three months and eight days.
She came to this country and to Clayton county in 1890; settling in Wagner township six miles south of Luana. Six years later, 1n 1896, she returned to Germany to get her mother. She again visited in Germany in 1913.
March 25th, 1898, here in Elkader, she was united in marriage with Wm. F. Walter. Five children were born to this union. One son died in infancy and the four others survive.
Until 1931 Wagner township continued to be the home of the Walter family. In that year they moved to Elkader, where the family home has since been. Mrs. Walter served her community as president of the U. B. Cemetery association in Wagner township.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters and two sons, as follows: Mrs. John Rugland, St. Olaf; Glen Walter, Luana; Karl Walter, Castalia and Ethel Walter at home. Seven grandchildren as well as one brother and two sisters also survive. The latter living in Germany are: Frederick Buckman, Mrs. Anna Borchers and Mrs. Dora Runge.
Funeral services were held at One-thirty o'clock last Thursday, at the late home and at two o'clock in the Evangelical and Reformed church, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Burial was made in the U.B. cemetery in Wagner township.
Casketbearers were: August Schrader, John Eno, Fred Kurth, Albert Huckstadt, Wm. C. Monlux, Mike Miller, Fred Ihlenfeldt and Pete M. Peterson.
