Funeral services for Charles Kelpien, 88, who died at his home here Saturday evening, April 14, were held from the home at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and at Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center at 2 p.m. The Rev. G. K. Mykland and the Rev. Victor Hackbarth, of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Garnavillo, officiated. Burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery.

Charles John Fredrick Kelpien, 88, died at his home in Elkader, Saturday, April 14. Although of advanced age, he died unexpectedly as he had not been ill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Zion Lutheran church in Clayton Center. The Rev. G. K. Mykland was assisted by the Rev. Victor Hackbarth of Garnavillo, who preached the German sermon.
Mr. Kelpien's parents were Mr. and Mrs. August Kelpien, and he was born Sept. 19, 1856, at Kuntzo, Provins Pommern, Germany. He had reached the age of 88 years, six months and 25 days at the time of his death.
He was sixteen years of age when his parents came to America with their family of this son and three daughters. Settlement was made at Clayton Center, later they bought a small farm near there. Charles John worked out for various farmers, but after his father's death, he helped his mother operate her farm.
Miss Lesette Taake became his bride on June 24, 1881, and they resided at the Kelpien farm until they moved to Elkader in 1922. During the years since moving from the farm, Elkader has been the family home except for the five years he was superintendent of the Clayton County Home.
He and his wife were privileged to spend nearly 64 years together. They had celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary at their home on June 24, 1944. Mrs. Kelpien and five of their eight children survive him. These are: George Kelpien of Elkader; Miss Ella Kelpien, Mrs. Emil Best, Karl Kelpien and Elmer Kelpien, all of Clayton Center community. Other survivors are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The three children who preceded him in death were Emma, August and Mahallie. His parents and his three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Schnider, Mrs. Lena Cook and Mrs. Reka Moran also preceded him in death.
Pallbearers at the funeral were Fred Ihlenfeldt, Henry Lenth, Elmer Bandow, Herman Lenth, Mike Garaghty, and Charles Gottschalk.
