Pfc. Ellsworth O. (Dick) Richards of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve was killed in action on Iwo Jima, volcano island, March 6, according to a telegram received here Monday by his wife, Mrs. Eileen Richards. He had been overseas since last August.
Private Richards was born Jan. 12, 1919, at Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Richards. He attended Elkader Junior college in 1939, and was married in August of that year to Eileen Mentzel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Mentzel of Elkader. He entered service March 23, 1944, and took his basic training at San Diego, Calif., following which he spent a three-day furlough at home, in May, 1944, and was transferred to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., before he was sent overseas.
Surviving are his wife and his parents, a son Ronnie, four years old, and a sister, Mrs. E. P. Flynn of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Memorial services for Private Richards are being planned, but the arrangements have not yet been completed.
