Clayton County Register, 09 Nov. 1944.

Mrs. Irene Stemmer, 67, died at the hospital at Iowa City Tuesday after a week's serious illness of epidemic meningitis. The body was returned to Elkader and funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Witt chapel, The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial will be in the Communia cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Stemmer, 67, who died at Iowa City Tuesday, Nov. 07, after a ten- day illness of meningitis followed by complications, were held at the Witt Funeral Chapel here Friday afternoon, Nov. 10, at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was made in the Communia cemetery.

Maude Irene Carpenter Stemmer was born at Tamaqua, Pa., Feb. 01, 1877, the daughter of John and Rosa Belle Carpenter. She came to Clayton County in 1891 and settled in Volga township. April 08, 1896, at Elkport, Ia., she was married to John G. Stemmer. In 1920 they moved to Elkader which has since been their home. Mr. Stemmer died in 1942.

Mrs. Stemmer was a member of Friedens Evangelical church.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. W. E. Shepherd and Mrs. H. W. Bender both of Waterloo, Mrs. J. L. Taylor, Northwood, Ia., Mrs. F. R. Ransom, El Cajon, Calif., three sons, Roland B. of Mulkileto, Wash., Herbert C. of Oroville, Calif, and Staff Sergeant John C. Stemmer stationed somewhere in Italy. Two brothers E. H. Carpenter of Owatonna, Minn., and Harry of Lansdowne, Penn. Six grandchildren, three are in the service Roland Stemmer, Jr., Ship Fitter 2/c, in Alaska, Pvt. John G. Stemmer in the South Pacific, and Yeoman 1/c Gordon J. Shepherd in the South Pacific, Richard H. Stemmer of Sacramento, Calif., Gloria Bender, Jean Taylor and one great-grandchild David Shepherd.

Pallbearers were six nephews: Ray and Raymond Hochhaus, William, Harry, George and Walter Refle.

Those who attended the funeral from away are: Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Shepherd and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bender and daughter Gloria of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor and daughter Jean of Northwood, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Rasmus Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. Harald Carpenter of Owatonna, Minn.; George Refle and sister Sarah of Dubuque; Mrs. Henry Gisleson of Luana; Mrs. Sophia Hochhaus, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hochhaus and Roy of Edgewood.
